Renewable Energy
At Goodwin Steel Castings, we proudly support the renewable energy sector with high-quality, precision-engineered components. One example includes ultra-low carbon steel rotor cores, weighing 1,500kg each, which are finish machined to exact specifications. These rotor cores are designed with low magnetic permeability, making them ideal for applications where magnetic interference must be minimised. Manufactured for a UK-based renewable energy project, these components demonstrate our commitment to supporting sustainable energy solutions with advanced materials and engineering excellence.
In support of renewable energy innovation, Goodwin Steel Castings also produces specialised trial castings from our proprietary Goodwin 410+ low alloy, medium tensile steel. A recent project involved the production of a 4,500kg, 1/6 scale trial casting, where finite element analysis (FEA) was used extensively to ensure uniform stress distribution prior to manufacture. This rigorous engineering approach ensures optimal performance and longevity of components used in demanding energy generation environments.
Our contributions to offshore renewable projects include the supply of Carbon Manganese Steel castings ranging from 1,150kg to 1,750kg. Specifically, Goodwin delivered 37 ram castings and 37 bearing castings for a wave energy farm operating in Portuguese waters. These precision-machined components are fabricated into hinge modules, forming a critical part of the energy capture system. Through robust materials and expert craftsmanship, Goodwin Steel Castings continues to play a vital role in powering the transition to cleaner, renewable energy sources.
