Heat Treatment

Goodwin Steel Castings’ heat treatment facilities are key to obtaining the mechanical and metallurgical properties that consistently deliver conforming castings to specification requirements.

Our furnace configurations vary from large production capabilities to small laboratory scale, in which 10kg to 100,000kg loads are processed with working volumes up to 125m3Our natural gas and electrically heated furnaces have been designed by experts who understand the requirements of performing quality metallurgical treatments. We have the ability to operate our furnaces with reducing or oxidising atmospheres, subject to the treatment requirements.

The thermal treatments applied are characterised to component section thickness, chemical composition, and geometry. We often use bespoke jigs and fixtures in furnaces to prevent distortion of components, thus ensuring their geometric conformance after heat treatment.

All furnaces are surveyed to AMS2750, in which tight temperature uniformity conformance is regularly checked at low and high operating temperatures. Quality heat treatments can also be verified by in furnace contact thermocouples and quench data can also be supplied upon request.

A bespoke software system is deployed to maintain traceability of all components on each heat treatment load, inclusive of representative test material. For optimal process conformity, we perform trend analysis of each asset, recording and reviewing furnace operational performance parameters.

Goodwin Steel Castings has the ability to water quench castings rapidly after thermal processing using our automated facilities, with the capability to quench 50,000kg direct from the furnace. An unrivalled depth of quench is achieved by artificially cooling the quench water to 5°C and ensuring a laminar flow rate of 1.0m/s at the component interface when quenching.

In conjunction with our dedicated de-hydrogenisation heat treatment facility, Goodwin Steel Castings prides itself on producing the most complex alloys in heavy sections for critical duty applications.
