Carbon steels are those with no deliberate alloy additions. Usually readily weldable, having a low carbon equivalent and are most frequently used for general engineering, constructional use and pressure applications such as valves and pumps.
Low temperature impact properties are improved by the addition of 1.0 to 1.5% manganese and these steels are often Charpy impact tested between minus 20 and 50°C.
